The Dandelion's Airship—A Short Story

The earth will always be brightened with a dandelions smile.

The Dandelion’s Airship

by Harriet Ives

Once upon a time there was the first dandelion that ever bloomed in the whole, wide world. The bud turned from green to gold then burst into a blooming flower. The dandelion nodded in the sunlight and nursed its small seed in the calyx or cup of the flower.

When the yellow bloom had lived for many days, the dainty petals fell to the earth and the wee seed slowly ripened. After a while they were ready to be scattered to the ground, but the green plant was much afraid there would never be any more beautiful dandelions.

“Don’t be afraid, came a whisper, I will see to that. I will make each of your tiny seeds into a little airship. I will give them good wings and shape them so that the first puff of wind that strives them when they are fully ripe, will scatter them in a safe place. You will have many seeds, and should some of them be destroyed others will not. The earth will always be brightened with a dandelion’s smile.”

The green plant waited and everything happened in just exactly this way, and in the sweet springtime there is no happier blossom to be found than the golden dandelion.
