Chakras: Balance, Behavior, and the Alchemy of Self-Awareness

Scorpian by Alani N.B. Ade

Within the energetic architecture of the human body exist 114 chakras. Of these, seven—aligned along the central axis of the body—are recognized as the major chakras. These primary energy centers exert a profound influence on our psychological properties, shaping behavior, perception, and lived experience on an energetic wavelength that precedes conscious thought.

The upper chakras govern the mental and cognitive aspects of psychological expression, while the lower chakras influence instinctual and survival-based responses. Together, they form an integrated system through which experience is processed and expressed. In this way, the chakras do not merely reflect who we are—they actively participate in how we respond to the world.

A chakra that is considered “open” is understood to be operative. Ideally, each chakra functions in a balanced and continuous state of operation. In practice, however, chakras often become over-active or under-active. Importantly, these imbalances do not occur in isolation. An over-active chakra is frequently compensating for one or more chakras that are under-active or blocked, and the inverse is equally true.

For this reason, attempting to suppress or amplify individual chakras in isolation is rarely effective. If a chakra is reduced or stimulated without addressing the underlying imbalance elsewhere in the system, compensation will simply reassert itself. Sustainable balance is achieved not by controlling symptoms, but by opening the chakras that require support—allowing the entire system to recalibrate naturally.

There are many practices that support this process, and no single path is universal. Understanding the attributes of each of the seven major chakra meridians allows for a more informed and individualized approach. This is especially relevant because there are mysteries associated with chakra activation and controlled balance that are unique to each person. These mysteries become easier to discern as one expands into underutilized—or “lost”—brain functions, particularly when the journey is approached as more than an egotistical pursuit.

When engaged with humility and intention, chakra work becomes less about personal power and more about alignment. Balanced chakras contribute not only to psychological coherence, but also to immune health and the body’s inherent capacity for self-healing. The energetic and the biological are not separate systems; they are interdependent expressions of the same intelligence.

The existence and function of the seven major chakras are documented across religious, cultural, and scientific traditions, extending back to the earliest written records. These systems have endured because they offer a framework for understanding the human condition that is both symbolic and practical. As with all meaningful study, comprehension deepens with expansion—what once appeared complex becomes intuitive through lived experience.

The true goal of this work is not accumulation of information, but transformation. This is the alchemical process: transmuting knowledge into wisdom, and wisdom into embodied practice. To study the chakras is to participate in that process—to become the highest, truest expression of the lessons learned.

In support of this exploration, the Chakra Test serves as a tool for measuring chakra operative states. Used thoughtfully, it offers insight not as a verdict, but as a starting point. With that intention, the study begins. One thing you may come to discover yourself, through the intentional activation and synchronization of Chakra energies is that momentum is life.
